ARIS Sonar Population Tracking

Project Overview

The ARIS Sonar project’s intent is to develop an automated method for the estimation of the returning run of Atlantic salmon in certain sections, Southwest (SW), Little Southwest (LSW) and Northwest (NW) of the Miramichi River. The method will provide an accurate and near real-time count of ascending Atlantic salmon, as well as other large fish, and it will provide size distribution estimates of the migrating fish in all conditions, including low visibility such as night time and high-water-level conditions.  The objective is to develop this method of automation and species identification to a point where agencies responsible for fisheries management may use the data in lieu of or to support existing population assessment methods.
